Project information
An edible oil plant by Sonai Eatables India on plot E-5 of the Indapur MIDC, at Loni Deokar in the east of Pune district, with 28,795 sq m of proposed built-up area on a 75,640 sq m plot. The plant prepares and extracts soybean, sunflower and cottonseed, and refines the oil - about 285 tonnes a day of each refined oil, with de-oiled cake, lecithin, fatty acids, acid oil and wax as by-products - in a seven-storey refinery and lecithin block, 25.6 m high. Around it stand a boiler house and coal shed, a thermic fluid heater, an acid oil unit, cooling towers and a pump house, oil tanks with loading and unloading bays, two de-oiled cake sheds of about 7,400 and 7,800 sq m, open coal and bagasse yards and a site office, for about 100 staff. A process plant like this uses far more power and water than its people do, so the environmental clearance has to show the process loads, the effluent treatment and the energy saving. The architecture is the architect's; our scope is the environmental clearance.
How We Helped Sonai Eatables, Plot E-5, MIDC Indapur
We prepared the water demand in January 2026 and revised it in August with the energy calculation, the external MEP services layout and the EV charging, lightning arrester and solar layouts; then the external plumbing, storm water, sewage, water supply, fire and tank layouts for the clearance, revised on 24 August, and the ECBC sheet on 26 August 2026. Power: every section of the plant loaded line by line - seed preparation 1,279 kW, the extraction section 622 kW, the cooling towers 529 kW, the boilers, thermic fluid heater and coal handling 377 kW, the refinery 254 kW, with oil unloading, fire fighting, the effluent plant, compressors and lighting - for 3,561 kW connected and 2,137 kW of maximum demand, 2,374 kVA, on a 2,500 kVA transformer; a 500 kVA DG set carries the fire fighting, the effluent plant and the lighting. Energy: 507 rooftop solar panels - 342 kW, 16% of the demand against the 1% the code asks - generate about 513 MWh a year; with 100 solar street lights and drives on the separators, cooling tower pumps, compressor and effluent plant, the saving is about 652 MWh a year, 10.45% of the plant's use. Water: about 4.5 kL a day for the staff and 184 kL for the process - 40 kL for the refinery and 144 kL for cooling - with a 144 kL tank for the cooling and boilers, a 150 kL fire water tank feeding a 150 mm hydrant main, and filtration, softening and chlorination for the bore and tanker supply. Sewage goes to a 10 KLD sewage plant and the process effluent to a 50 KLD effluent treatment plant, with zero liquid discharge - the treated effluent is reused in the plant. EV charging: 53 car and 105 two-wheeler points. Rainwater: twelve recharge pits of 2.5 x 2.5 x 2 m with filters, for the roofs and the yards.
The brief
What the project needed, and how we answered
- 01
A process plant's load, line by line.
Each section was loaded from the plant's own connected-load list - seed preparation, extraction, refinery, boilers, cooling towers, oil unloading, fire fighting and the effluent plant - for 2,374 kVA of demand on one 2,500 kVA transformer.
- 02
Water for cooling, not just for people.
The staff need 4.5 kL a day; the process needs 184 kL - so a 144 kL tank serves the cooling towers and boilers, and the effluent plant's treated water is reused in the plant, with nothing discharged.
- 03
Energy savings the clearance can count.
342 kW of rooftop solar, 100 solar street lights and drives on the separators and pumps save about 652 MWh a year - 10.45% of the plant's use.
